Leave it to the Germans to figure out a way to engineer a house that stays warm without using energy. “Passive houses,” a concept currently being put into practice in a city in central Germany, use ultrathick insulation to essentially encase the home in airtight shell, which is warmed not only by the sun, but also by the heat radiated from appliances and even the inhabitants’ bodies. The total amount of energy used to supply heat and hot water to these passive houses is no more than would be used to run a hair dryer. So simple…and sensible.
